Despite the first round of samples to come back negative since E. coli was first detected in the Pembroke water supply, a boilwater order is still in effect.
Public Works officials said 32 samples taken Thursday were absent of coliform, which also means no E. coli.
Three sets of samples, three days in a row, must return negative results before the city can lift the boil-water order.
It has been a week since the boil order was placed on the entire city of Pembroke.
All week long, Pembroke officials have been distributing bottled water to residents.
In the meantime, residents should boil tap water for at least one minute before using it. Officials are flushing the system and adding more chlorine to it as well.
The next round of samples is expected to return Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
Pembroke isn't the only city to have water problems this week. Three more Massachusetts towns have implemented a water boiling advisory after E. coli was found in the public water supply.
Residents of Fire District 2, which covers South Hadley and parts of Granby, have been advised to boil tap water. On Friday, the town of Dudley also discovered E. coli in the public water supply. Authorities say they believe the bacteria got into one of the pipes but they don't know how long the boil-water order will be in effect.
