Accused Drunk Driver Charged In Trooper Crash

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The accused drunk driver charged with hitting a state trooper on the Massachusetts Turnpike was released on a promise to return to court after his arraignment Monday.

Trooper Dana Cresta, 49, is being treated for serious injuries after he was struck by a car early Saturday in the breakdown lane on the westbound side of the Pike in Newton.

Police said Cresta was investigating a single-car crash when he was hit by a 2008 Nissan Maxima driven by Patrick Sullivan, 23, of Framingham.

Sullivan was arraigned Monday morning in Newton District Court on charges of driving drunk, operating in the breakdown lane and operating to endanger.

According to a police report obtained by the Boston Herald, Sullivan admitted hitting the trooper, but told officers who arrested him, "I could have just taken off."

His blood alcohol level was allegedly .155 percent, nearly twice the legal limit.

Sullivan agreed not to drive until the case is resolved. He was ordered held on $1,000 bail.

2 Weekend Crashes

It was the first of two weekend crashes involving State Police.

Early Sunday, a trooper was investigating a crash on I-93 in Braintree when his empty cruiser was struck by a car operated by an allegedly drunken driver. The trooper was not hurt.

Push For "Move Over" Law

Some lawmakers are now calling for a so-called "move over" law.

It would require drivers to slow down and give wide space to emergency vehicles parked on the roads with their lights flashing or face a ticket of at least $100.
