13 Teens Arrested At Plainville Drinking Party

PLAINVILLE (WBZ) ― Plainville police are cracking down on underage drinking.

Thirteen people between the ages of 15 and 19 were arrested Friday at a drinking party in the woods, just weeks after a 17-year-old Plainville girl died following a party at an abandoned airport in nearby Norfolk.

Police say they found the teens in a sophisticated fort that was a weather-tight shelter covered with leaves. When the teen's arrived at the fort, police were waiting. "Where as in the past, we might wait until this information came to us about a party, now… we're actually aggressively looking to see where these kinds of events are taking place," said Plainville Police Chief Ned Merrick.

Officers allegedly found beer and other alcoholic drinks as well as marijuana at the party. All of the teens arrested were released to their parents. Most were arraigned on Monday.

The arrests come three weeks after 17-year-old Taylor Meyer drowned following an underage drinking party. "It's almost as if this teenage drinking thing is reaching an epidemic proportion, and I know that a lot of these kids feel invincible… it just goes with the age, but I think the Taylor Meyer tragedy has indicated very clearly that they're really not invincible," said Merrick.

The Plainville bust was the third party in the region police have broken up in the past few weeks.

WBZ has also learned there could be one or two arrests in connection to Meyer's death. Police say those arrested could be charged with distribution to minors.
