Come inside Pat Murphy's cottage and you will get a beautiful view of the ocean. The Murphy's built two cottages on Plum Island 100 years ago back when the waters were a football field away, with room to spare.
But now the cottages are in jeopardy. That's why they're planning on raising them up on pilings if they can.
Inch by inch, foot by foot, Plum Island is washing away.
The town is putting huge sandbags on the beach at a cost of a $250,000 -- and truckloads of sand are brought in daily. The sandbag work at the beach is expected to take two or three more weeks. The crews can't work at all when the tide is high.
Nobody will ever forget Gerry Buzzatta's house
falling into the sea last week, but the tide has also washing in some goodwill. The
Blue Inn at Plum Island is offering Buzzatta a free place to stay her own cottage as long as she needs it. "Our hearts went out to her when that happened," said Ann Seamonds of the Blue Inn. "And we just thought this gesture might make things easier for her."
Meanwhile, the rest of the homeowners can only hope that they won't be next.
