Inch by inch, foot by foot, Plum Island is washing away.

Crews worked late into the night Friday, using heavy machinery to fill giant sandbags that are hoped to help prevent devastating erosion on Plum Island.
The disappearing beach has threatened homes, destroying one just last week.
Each day brings more erosion as the ocean relentlessly claims precious inches of sand.
This weekend's upcoming storm raises huge concern.
"There's another coastal storm coming this weekend, and now they're talking (about) another storm coming during the week," said resident Dan Mahoney. "So every time a storm comes up the coast, we're all very stressed."
The town of Newbury is spending about $250,000 to put giant sandbags on the beach.
But some residents say the towns need federal help to really fix the problem.
"This is a barrier island, and we probably shouldn't be here at all," said resident Jan Nealer.
The jetty repair work that needs to be done will cost big money during a time when money is scarce.
In addition to any winter weather New England might get next week, much higher tides are expected than normal later this month.
