Irate Parents Shut Out Of Overcrowded Graduation
PLYMOUTH (WBZ) ―
Plenty of parents in Plymouth are irate over the handling of their kids' high school graduation. As many as 100 parents of Plymouth South seniors were shut out from seeing their children graduate last weekend because of overcrowding.
The fire department said that Memorial Hall, which has a capacity of just over 1,700, reached that capacity before the ceremony started. So, the doors were closed. Police had to be called in to the control the angry crowd.
Now some parents
tell the Patriot Ledger that they have been robbed of a once-in-a-lifetime moment that they can never get back.
The 350 graduates of Plymouth South were given four tickets each for guests to the indoor ceremony. Add the 350 graduates, 100 faculty members and 80 invited alumni guests that is 1,930 invited guests for a hall that holds 1,723.
The superintendent told the Ledger that about 2,300 people turned out of the ceremony. He says parents were advised to arrive one hour early and that everybody who did arrive by that time, got inside.
Parents who were unable to get seats were rotated inside to catch a glimpse of the students receiving their diplomas. They will also receive a DVD of the ceremony.
Last weekend's poor weather forced some graduations ceremonies scheduled to take place outside, inside. That was not the case at Plymouth South. Their ceremony was always scheduled to take place inside Memorial Hall.
Superintendent Gary Maestas says that next year they will likely limit tickets to two per graduate. Steps will also be taken to ensure tickets can not be duplicated.
