Elderly Driver Hits Police Cruiser In Lawrence
LAWRENCE (AP) ―
A Lawrence police officer is being treated for neck and back injuries after his cruiser was broadsided by a car driven by an 83-year-old woman.
Police said Officer Carmen Purpora was taken to Lawrence General Hospital after the crash Wednesday afternoon at the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and Marston Street.
The driver, Gloria Consoli, told police that she stopped at a stop sign before proceeding into the intersection. Her car struck the passenger side of the cruiser. Consoli and a 94-year-old passenger were also taken to the hospital but did not appear seriously hurt.
Police said Purpora was on routine patrol at the time and the lights and sirens on his cruiser were not activated.
Police Chief John Romera says the accident is under investigation.
