A Duxbury police officer who was hit while working a detail at the Marshfield Fair earlier this month has died.
Officer Mel Dyer passed away Monday night at Brigham & Women's Hospital.
He was directing traffic at the intersection of Main and South River Streets on
August 16 when a car hit him after failing to stop.
Dyer was knocked unconscious and rushed to the hospital.
The driver of the car that allegedly struck Dyer has been identified by police as Kristen Wusteney of Marshfield. She faces a variety of charges, including motor vehicle homicide.
Dyer was a part-time police officer for the Town of Duxbury, as well as a former Deputy Sheriff for the Plymouth County Sheriff's office.
Plymouth County Sheriff Joseph MacDonald encouraged Dyer to become a police officer at 64 years old.
"He was a personal friend of mine," MacDonald said. "He went into the basic reserve police academy in Plymouth."
"Officer Dyer was quite an officer," said Duxbury Police Chief Mark Deluca. "He was honorable. He was just a great guy. He's going to be sorely missed, not just by us but by society in general."
