Jamaica Plain Nuns Head To NY To See Pope

~ About Benedict XVI's Papacy And U.S. Visit

JAMAICA PLAIN (WBZ) ― Daily prayer in a quiet chapel is a staple of life for the Daughters of St. Paul in Jamaica Plain. This weekend, the constant of prayer won't change, but for a small group, the tranquil environment will.

"I think for me what is going to be moving is to celebrate the liturgy, celebrate mass with maybe 60,000 other people," says Sister Karen Anderson, FSP. "It's an opportunity of communion, to live this moment, to pray this moment. It'll be a moment of a lifetime."

She holds in her hand 10 tickets, for herself, three fellow nuns and six novices, to the papal mass at Yankee Stadium.

A flock of 46,000 packed Nationals Stadium in the nation's capitol for Benedict's first public mass of his U.S. pilgrimage.

"He really comes to us as a shepherd and a universal teacher and friend of the people, and I'm really excited to be able to be able to be part of that celebration together," says Emi Bratt, a novice.

Novices study for two years to become nuns.

The Daughters of St. Paul take their name from Paul the apostle, an evangelist who spread the word of Christ through letters. The sisters spread the word as well, through all kinds of media.

"We've got a couple of books for children that are beautifully illustrated," says Anderson. "We've published Benedict's encyclicals."

They also maintain a Web site, www.pauline.org.

Anderson says Benedict's message is one of hope. She and her fellow sisters have been keeping tabs on his U.S. visit via the Internet and television.

She calls the opportunity to attend mass celebrated by the shepherd of her faith, a moment of a lifetime.
