Monday Expected To Be Busiest Day For Post Office
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Do you still have cards and packages to send out for the holidays? If so, you better get ready to wait in long lines at the post office.
The U.S. Postal Service says today, December 17, is the busiest day of the season as people rush to send out last-minute items and cards to friends and family. Officials say they expect nearly one billion cards, letters and packages to be mailed on Monday.
On an average day, the post office receives 82 million cards and letters, but on Monday, that number is expected to more than triple to about 275 million.
Officials are suggesting people use automated postal centers, which are open 24-hours a day, to avoid the long lines that are expected.
In November the Postal Service said in order for packages to arrive by Christmas using parcel post, the least expensive option for mailing, they must be mailed by December 15th.
For those who need a little more shopping time, there are still two more ways to get your packages where they need to be by Christmas. Packages sent via priority mail have a deadline of December 20, while express mail packages can be sent as late as December 22.
