Sides Make Final Push For & Against Dog Racing

Question 3 Proponents Rally In Boston Common

BOSTON (AP) ― Both sides in the battle over a ballot question to ban greyhound racing in Massachusetts are making a final push for votes.

Supporters of the initiative, which would phase out dog racing by 2010, rallied on Boston Common on Sunday to call attention to the proposal, which they say would help protect greyhounds from injuries.

Among those supporting the initiative is the Humane Society of the United States.

Critics of the initiative were putting on their own push, running radio and television ads pointing to the financial hardships of those who would be put out of work at the state's two dog tracks if the measure passes.

Dog track owners also say that the greyhounds are well treated and they've stepped up greyhound adoption efforts.
