MBTA spokeswoman Lydia Rivera said the workers were from SCS Environmental Services of East Boston. They were in a manhole near the substation in the parking lot of North Quincy Station cleaning out asbestos when the explosion happened.

One of the workers, Carlos Minas, 38, was taken to Mass. General Hospital, where he is listed in fair condition.

The other worker was taken to Boston Medical Center. His condition is not yet known.
