State: Schools May Have Received Recalled Beef

BOSTON (AP) ― Massachusetts health officials say some of the state's public schools may have received meat subject to the nation's largest beef recall.

The Department of Public Health says there were no direct shipments of Westland/Hallmark meat to the state's school lunch program.

However, some schools may have received recalled beef they bought separately from wholesale processors.

Wholesalers produce meat under private labels that can differ from labels that federal officials provided in recalling products from Westland/Hallmark. State officials are working with five companies to determine if they supplied schools with potentially tainted meat.

Federal officials ordered the recall of 143 million pounds of beef from a California slaughterhouse that's the subject of an animal-abuse investigation.
