Red Tide Reaches The Cape
SANDWICH (AP) ―
The state has closed several more shellfish beds as a bloom of red tide continues to spread.
The Division of Marine Fisheries shut down shellfishing in Bourne and Sandwich yesterday, adding to closures that now stretch to the North Shore.
The toxin-producing algae shows up in bivalves, but does not affect lobsters, crabs and scallops.
A senior scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution told The Cape Cod Times that the current red tide outbreak is following the same pattern as an outbreak in 2005 that devastated the shellfishing industry.
While the latest red tide outbreak has now reached the Cape Cod Canal, experts say there are no other problems elsewhere on the Cape.
