Arrest Made In Murder Of Revere Police Officer

REVERE (WBZ) ― A teen has been arrested in connection with the murder of a Revere police officer over the weekend, WBZ has confirmed, and two others are considered persons of interest.

Derek Lodie, 17, was arrested Tuesday and is being held without bail after being arraigned in Chelsea District Court on a single count of being an accessory before the fact to murder. Police said Lodie's bail was revoked on an earlier, unrelated offense.

Robert Iacoveillo and James Heang are considered persons of interest in the case, according to WBZ sources. They were in court Monday but were charged with crimes unrelated to the officer's shooting.

Officer Dan Talbot, 30, was off-duty when he was shot in the head behind Revere High School early Saturday morning.

Investigators said he was socializing with two other off-duty police officers, when they were approached by a group of young men in their late teens and early 20s. According to Suffolk District Attorney Dan Conley, shots were exchanged and Talbot was struck in the head.

Lodie is accused of igniting the conversation between the officers and the group of young men that eventually led to the fatal shooting.

"As the group confronted Officer Talbot and his group, one of the defendant's associates opened fire with a semi-automatic pistol," said prosecutor Ed Zabin. "As a result of that action, Officer Talbot was struck in the head and killed."

In court, Lodie stayed behind a wall and never faced Talbot's fiancée or the 100 fellow officers who packed the courtroom during the arraignment.

"I just want to see justice served, but I wanted to see the kid's face, too," said Talbot's friend Ralph Ravesi. "Unfortunately, he's a coward and wouldn't show his face. I didn't expect anything else from him anyways."

Police have not yet identified who they believe the shooter is. But WBZ has learned that police have searched the homes of Iacoveillo and Heang.

Near Heang's home in Revere, police searched catch basins where sources say police found pieces of a gun in the drainage area below.

"I'm not going to elaborate on any facts of the case, yet," said Revere Police Chief Terrance Reardon. "The investigation is still ongoing. We have a lot of loose ends to tie up, and there's a lot of work ahead of us."

Lodie is scheduled to be back in court for a bail hearing on Oct. 9.

An autopsy performed on Talbot revealed the bullet removed was not from a gun issued to officers in the Revere Police Department.

Talbot served five years on the force and worked in the gang unit.

A memorial fund has been set up for Officer Talbot's family:

His wake will be Friday and his funeral Saturday at St. Anthony's Church on Revere Street in Revere.
