Murder Charges Filed In Death Of Revere Officer
by Kathy Curran
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
A Revere man will be arraigned on Tuesday for the murder of Revere Police Officer Daniel Talbot.
Robert Iacoviello, 20, was indicted by a Suffolk County grand jury, District Attorney Daniel Conley announced Friday.
Iacoviello has been held on unrelated weapons charges and a probation violation since shortly after the Sept. 29 killing.
Talbot, 30, was off-duty at the time of the early morning shooting, prosecutors said. Talbot, his fiancé and three other off-duty police officers were drinking alcohol behind Revere High School when they were approached by Derek Lodie, 17, Conley told reporters.
According to Conley, words were exchanged and Lodie left the scene. An investigation showed that a short time later, Lodie returned and more words were exchanged., Conley said.
"Evidence suggests that Officer Talbot and Officer William Soto then began to approach Lodie," Conley said. "It was at that time that Iacoviello and two other men arrived at the scene.
"Iacoviello was armed with a 9mm handgun," Conley said. "For reasons that only he knows, Iacoviello produced his weapon and fired. Officer Daniel Talbot, mortally wounded with a gunshot wound to the head, went down."
Lodie is the only other person arrested in the case. He has pleaded not guilty to a charge of being an accessory before the fact.
Lodie is being held without bail.
Sources tell WBZ-TV that the grand jury investigation is now focused on Jimmy Hang, who is being held on an unrelated charge.
"We're only halfway there," Police Chief Terence Reardon said. "Needless to say, we're going to have to be patient, trust the powers that be and let the system work."
Sources also tell WBZ that the murder weapon was found nearby in a storm drain, and that a ballistics test matched it with the bullet that struck Talbot.
Talbot served five years on the Revere Police force and worked in the gang unit.
