Son Arrested In Septic Tank Murder Case

WARREN, R.I. (WBZ) ― A Rhode Island man is charged with the murder of his parents, who were found in their back yard cesspool.

Police arrested James Soares, 24, of Warren. The arrest was made after officials found the bodies of 60-year-old James Soares Sr. and 53-year-old Marian Soares in their septic tank on Saturday.

Police believe the couple's son killed his parents with a garden hoe on July 9.

Police wouldn't say what led them to dig out the cesspool with a back hoe Saturday morning, or any injuries found on the bodies.

Family members reported the couple missing on July 15 after they didn't show up for a family reunion.

James Soares Sr. had a criminal record after pleading no contest to drug possession charges in 1986. In 2002, police seized guns and 30,000 rounds of ammunition from their house. James Soares later served a year of home confinement in that case.
