State officials are asking boaters off the tip of Cape Cod to slow down and avoid up to 70 endangered right whales feeding in the area.
The state Division of Marine Fisheries issued a mariner advisory Friday, warning boaters to slow to 10 mph.
Ship strikes are one of the leading human causes of death of the North Atlantic right whale, which has an estimated population of less than 400.
The whales have congregated around Provincetown because of a high concentration of zooplankton in the waters.
The animals feed just below the surface, often making them difficult to see.
The warning comes at a time when the number of vessels plying the waters is expected to increase due to warmer weather.
