QUINCY (WBZ) ― A UMass-Boston student is accused of leading police on a high-speed chase 17 miles in the wrong direction early Friday morning.

Police say 21-year-old Siobhan Hayes of Randolph was drunk and driving northbound on Route 3 South in Marshfield about 3 a.m.

"A trooper from state police Norwell reported that he observed this car passing Derby Street in Weymouth driving approximately 100 miles per hour," said prosecutor Tom Cavanagh at Hayes' arraignment in Quincy District Court.

"Several civilian 911 cell phone calls into the state police barracks indicated the same."

Police say the car then continued to the Braintree split, where another trooper on a work detail saw the car, and attempted to stop it.

"The officer then caught up to the vehicle, paralleled it in the northbound lane with his blues lights and siren activated," said Cavanagh. "This trooper using a spotlight waved at the operator trying to get her attention."

But the car continued, at speeds of 70-to-100 miles per hour. Another trooper on a work detail further up on 93 South laid out stop sticks to deflate the car's tires. Police say the car ended up swiping another vehicle, then hit the jersey barrier three times before coming to a stop.

Police say Hayes took off into the woods and they found her about 100 yards away. When brought to the police barracks, she took a breathalyzer test. Police say she registered .16.

Hayes faces several charges, including drunk driving, speeding and failure to stop for a police officer.

She was released on $5,000 bail. Hayes, who recently moved to Massachusetts from Minnesota, will be back in court next month.
