A woman and two young children were hit and killed by two cars driving on Interstate 495 north In Lowell, closing the roadway Friday night.
All three pedestrians were rushed to local hospitals where they died. State police officials said the woman, 39-year-old Marcelle Thibault, of Bellingham, was driving southbound in the northbound lanes of I-495 before pulling over to the grass on the right-hand side of the roadway around 9 p.m.
At some point, Thibault got out of the car and tried to cross the highway with her 4-year-old nephew and 5-year-old niece.
Moments later, all three were hit in the middle of northbound I-495 by an oncoming vehicle before being hit by a second car, police officials said. The first vehicle was driven by 47-year-old Jennifer Jolly, and the second was driven by 43-year-old James Scammon. Neither driver was injured.
According to her mother, Thibault had just picked the kids up from her twin sister's house for a sleepover when the collision happened.
It's still unknown why Thibault and the two children were trying to cross the roadway, police said, and the collision remains under investigation.
Police did not release the names of the children due to their young ages.
All northbound lanes of I-495 near the Woburn exit were closed Friday night.
Thibault's neighbors described her as warm, welcoming and a devoted mother of two teenagers.
Her father-in-law, Paul Thibault, told WBZ, "We're all stunned. It's about as sad as you can get."
