Cape Cod Cop Accused Of Beating Man
Victim Required 37 Stitches
SANDWICH, Mass. (AP) ―
A veteran Sandwich police officer has been charged with beating a man while off duty so severely that he needed 37 stitches to the face.
A clerk magistrate issued a complaint for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon against Officer Dennis Byrne this week following an in internal investigation by Sandwich police.
Chief Michael Miller tells the Cape Cod Times that the 38-year-old Byrne, a 10-year veteran, is on paid administrative leave pending a disciplinary hearing.
Miller says the alleged incident took place on June 17. He did not say what motivated the alleged assault.
Byrne is scheduled to be arraigned July 21 in Barnstable District Court.
His lawyer did not respond to requests for comment from the newspaper.
