Storm Recovery Closes Some Schools For The Year
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
For the third day, dozens of school districts in Massachusetts and New Hampshire were forced to cancel classes, as their towns struggle with power outages, impassable roads, and lack of running water.
More than 60 districts were canceled on Tuesday, with several deciding to keep schools closed for the rest of the week in some cases the rest of the calendar year.
View: Today's School Closings
The Quabbin Regional District in Barre, Mass., Mascenic Regional District in New Ipswich, N.H, Lunenburg School District, the Jaffrey-Rindge district in Jaffrey, N.H. and the North Middlesex Regional District in Townsend, Mass. have cancelled classes through January 5. The Christmas break was scheduled to begin next week.
The Ashburnham-Westminster Regional School District, the Narragansett Regional District in Mass., the Abby Kelley Foster Charter School in Worcester, the City of Worcester, Winchendon, Mass., Fitchburg and the Wachusett Regional School District in Jefferson, Mass. have cancelled classes through at least Friday.
The closures put an obvious strain on parents, who need to come up with unscheduled child care arrangements.
By state law, children in Massachusetts and New Hampshire must attend 180 days of classes. There is no word yet how the districts that have closed long-term will make up the missed days of class. Options include extending the school year into summer, or canceling other scheduled school vacations.
