Four police officers, one firefighter and a woman were treated for smoke inhalation following a house fire in Scituate.
Police were called to the home on 24 Borden Road around 3:00 p.m. after a neighbor noticed the homeowner, who has a history of mental illness, acting strangely.
A neighbor said the 44-year old woman spray painted the number 24 on the side of the home and an arrow on the street.
The woman would not let the officers inside the home.
A short time later, they noticed smoke and fire coming from inside the home.
"They couldn't get through the kitchen... they starting breaking windows," said neighbor Sharon Costas. "They finally got through the front door... she wouldn't come out."
The officers eventually managed to get the woman outside.
The four officers and firefighter treated for smoke inhalation have been released from area hospitals. The woman is also expected to be released.
Neighbors said the woman was acting paranoid recently, apparently afraid someone was trying to break into the home. She was also depressed due to the death of her pet.
