Poll: Coakley Leads The Pack In Senate Race
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
The Democrats fighting for the late Ted Kennedy's U.S. Senate seat will hold their first debate tonight.
A new poll released Monday suggests Attorney General Martha Coakley is the front-runner.
According to the Western New England College survey, Coakley leads the pack of four Democrats with 37 percent.
PAGLIUCA, CAPUANO BATTLE FOR SECOND
Boston Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca was a distant second with 14-percent, just ahead of Congressman Mike Capuano's 13 percent.
City Year co-founder Alan Khazei was last with four-percent.
468 registered voters were surveyed in the poll, which was conducted last week.
26 percent are still undecided.
The primary is December 8.
The winner will face Republican State Rep. Scott Brown in the special election January 19.
Brown is running unopposed in the GOP primary.
COAKLEY LEADS BROWN
The poll found that Coakley currently leads Brown by 26 points in a head-to-head matchup.
"With six weeks to go until the primary, the Democratic nomination is Martha Coakley's to lose," said Tim Vercellotti, co-director of the Western New England College Polling Institute.
THE DEBATE
You can watch tonight's debate live on WBZ-TV and wbztv.com at 7 p.m., followed by a post-debate webcast with Jon Keller and Brown.
