A bank robbery attempt in Arlington Tuesday may be the latest hit by a serial bank robber.
Police say the man who approached a teller at the Central Bank in Arlington didn't get any money, but had better luck at the Winter Hill Savings Bank in Chelsea.
Police say they believe the same man was involved in both incidents.
They are also looking into whether the robber is the same man who robbed four other banks in the area this month.
In each case, including Tuesday's incidents, the robber implied he had a gun but didn't show one.
In the Arlington attempted robbery at 175 Broadway, the man approached a new employee who was training as a teller at a window that does not handle cash. When he asked the employee for cash, police say the woman was so confused she went to get her manager.
The attempted robber fled the bank and was last seen heading on foot northbound on River Street. It's believed he may have fled the scene in a white Jeep driven by a second man.
"In this economy you get people who've never committed this kind of crime before," said Arlington Police Lt. John Serson. "They're not seasoned criminals."
The FBI says the robberies may be linked to a robbery at a Sovereign Bank in Winchester last Thursday and one at a TD Banknorth in Woburn on Feb. 3.
He's described as a white man in his 20s, 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a thin build and short hair. In the Arlington case, the man was seen fleeing the scene in a whote Jeep with another man behind the wheel.
"A bank robbery is definitely a crime of desperation," said Lt. Serson. "They go in knowing there are cameras all over them, but they have nothing to lose."
Anyone with information about any of the area robberies is asked to contact their local police department.
