A teenage father from Haverhill pleaded not guilty to charges he violently shook his infant daughter early Tuesday morning.
18-year-old Ivan Rosario was arrested early this morning after police say he shook his 3-month-old daughter, Yolisse Rivera, so hard she had to be rushed to the hospital.
Prosecutors say Rosario was watching the baby while her mother was preparing a bottle. He told police the baby would not stop crying, so he raised her over his head and shook her several times.
Assistant District Attorney John DePaulo told the judge, "The baby's eyes rolled up to the back of its head and was rushed to a medical center down to Boston."
According to court papers, when Rosario stopped shaking the baby, the crying stopped and she started to have difficulty breathing.
The baby girl is now being treated for a serious brain injury at New England Medical Center in Boston.
Rosario is being held without bail. He is due back in Haverhill District Court on Nov. 18 for a dangerousness hearing.
The maximum penalty for the charges Rosario faces is 15 years in state prison or two-and-a-half years in the House of Correction.
