Captain Shane Murphy Returns To His Seekonk Home
SEEKONK (WBZ) ―
Captain Shane Murphy returned home from his life threatening ordeal with pirates off the Horn of Africa Thursday night. "I've been around this entire planet," he says. "I've been to every continent, hundreds of countries, and I mean this 100 percent: Boston is the best city in the world."
But he returns to his favorite part of the world a much different man. "I could feel the prayers from people at home. I drew strength from it...I could feel my friends. I could feel my family and it was just something I had motivating me the whole time to get me through it and just get me home. That's all I wanted to do."
On his first day home, he wore a T-shirt with a skull pirate logo, and a bullet casing from a pirate's weapon around his neck. "I'll tell you what, when they found out we were Americans, they were jumping around celebrating, clapping. This was a big fish. They've been waiting for this. So the problem's out there. This is real."
He described how he improvised with tricks to spook the pirates and tire them out. "Scooby-Doo style
We had the ship all blacked-out, dark with alarms and I was speaking with them over the radio, calling distress messages out to coalition ships and having fake conversations
They were under the impression there was help a lot closer."
He says he is concerned for the safety of the unarmed crews that are still out at sea. When asked if he'd be returning to his job, Murphy said he's not sure but is considering a new career fighting for better security on the ocean.
