A State Police Bomb Squad descended upon a Shaws parking lot in Hyannis Tuesday night where a homemade bomb exploded.
Hyannis fire officials said the bomb squad had to detonate a second bomb left in the parking lot about 150 feet away from the first one that exploded earlier. The area was secured off before officials detonated the bomb, and no one was injured in either explosion.
An 18-year-oldĀ man later turned himself in and said he was responsible for the homemade bomb, Hyannis fire officials said.
The young man said he had bought household chemicals from Shaws, combined them in tin foil inside a Coke bottle and lit the aluminum foil, officials said.
The gas expanded and then blew the bottle up, spraying acid out. Police said while there were not many people in the parking lot at the time and no one was injured, the acid inside the bottle could have harmed people.
Several witnesses saw the teen drive away after the first bomb exploded. They called 911 to report the explosion and his license plate number. Officals said when the man returned to the scene he asked them if they were there because of the soda bottles in the parking lot. When fire officials said they were, the man said he was responsible and police searched his vehicle. They said they found enough ingredients to make more bombs.
The man was charged with a felony. He told police officials he wanted to make a loud noise but didn't intend to hurt anyone, adding that he learned how to make the bombs from a YouTube video.
