Coming Soon To Six Flags NE: Bigger Rides

AGAWAM (AP) ― Agawam's Zoning Board of Appeals has approved an ordinance amendment that will allow the Six Flags New England amusement park to build roller coasters up to 200 feet tall.

The previous maximum height allowed without a special permit was 45 feet and to build tall rides, the park has in the past needed a special permit. The process of winning approval from the board contributed to Six Flags abandoning a $7.5 million roller coaster project earlier this year.

City Councilor George Bitzas said the board's 8-2 decision Wednesday was in the best interests of the city.

The park is a major economic engine for the city, paying more than $2 million a year in real estate and property taxes.

Six Flags New England President Larry Litton says he's "thrilled" with the decision.
