An Everett man was airlifted to a Boston hospital Thursday afternoon after he smashed into a tree while sledding with his family in North Reading.
Relatives said 39-year-old Douglas Hohler punctured a lung and cracked all his ribs when his back hit a tree while he was sledding down a hill at the
Hillview Golf Course on North Street.
He was in good condition Friday at Boston Medical Center.
Police say Hohler was sledding with his wife and children when the accident happened. His daughter was on the sled with him, but she was not hurt.
"He just happened to be going right into the tree and he could not stop, mostly because his daughter was on his lap," Hohler's brother, David said.
"Otherwise he probably could have fell off or something, but obviously you risk injury with a child on your lap if you fall off the sled."
The family was sledding on a steep hill with trees at the bottom and a pond nearby.
"His injuries were pretty serious, and he was hypothermic because he was out in the cold for a long time -- probably 15 to 20 minutes -- and due to the injuries from hitting the tree and so forth," said North Reading fire Chief Richard Harris.
He was conscious when paramedics arrived. Holder was taken to BMC on a med flight helicopter.
His brother said Hohler faces a long and painful recovery.
