Slim Shots Raise Questions About Appetite Control

BOSTON (WBZ) ― A new product on the market that claims to be an appetite controller is popping up in advertisements on television and in tabloid magazines, making some people wonder how legitimate the "Slim Shots" really are.

The ads for Slim Shots promise customers will eat up to 40 percent less every day without feeling hungry just by drinking two shots of the vanilla flavored drink.

So what's in the shots?

A spokesperson for Slim Shot said the drink "is an oat oil, palm oil emulsion," which the manufacturer claims will trigger the body's natural appetite control mechanism.

So, it claims, customers will feel satisfied longer and will, therefore, eat less. Even at $40 per 30 shots, Slim Shots have been flying off the shelves. The manufacturer's own study found that people ate up to 30 percent less in 4 to 8 hours compared to when they didn't take the Slim Shots.

Samantha Cassidy, nutrition director for the Good Housekeeping Institute, took a look at the product.

Cassidy advises the manufacturer's study is only a short-term study and doesn't show that people actually lost weight, only that they ate less.

Each shot contains about 20 calories.

Cassidy says, "If you eat for emotional or other reasons, this product likely won't help."

In a statement, the manufacturer says they stand behind their testing methods saying, "The participants using the shots ate up to 30 percent less every day." They also suggest anyone about to embark on the program should first see a doctor.
