BOSTON (WBZ) ― The first significant snowstorm of the season is on the way for early Wednesday, making both the morning and evening commutes treacherous.

WBZ meteorologist Mish Michaels says there is a winter storm warning in effect for areas north and west of Boston and a heavy snow warning in parts of Worcester County for late tonight until Wednesday night. There is also a high wind watch up for Cape Cod.

The totals will vary based on the storm's track and how far it moves inland.

Michaels says it will start snowing around 1 a.m. and most of the area will have something on the ground before dawn.

The South Coast and the Cape and Islands will get 1-to-3 inches, but most of that will then be washed away by rain and sleet.

Michaels predicts 3-to-6 inches will fall in Boston and areas southwest including most of Norfolk and Bristol counties.

Cities and towns north and west of Boston should prepare for 6-to-12 inches of snow, while western Massachusetts and northern New England will be hit with 12-to-24 inches, which is good news for skiers and snowboarders.

Sleet and rain will move into most of the region in the afternoon. Then cold air will return to southeastern Massachusetts, which will get a crusty coasting of 1-to-2 inches of more snow Wednesday evening.

There could also be some damaging wind gusts and scattered power outages late in the day.
