Will The Snow Cause Another Traffic Nightmare?

Check: Storm Maps
Read: WBZ Weather Blog

BOSTON (WBZ) ― With a foot of snow in the forecast for Friday afternoon, Gov. Deval Patrick wants to avoid a traffic disaster similar to one last year that left drivers stranded for hours on area highways.

The snow is expected to start falling around 1 p.m.

STORMS SIMILAR

WBZ meteorologists say the pattern of this storm is very similar to the one that hit the region December 13, 2007 - which crippled the afternoon commute with historic traffic jams.

Thousands of drivers left work early and ended up sitting in their cars for several hours.

EARLY MORNING CALL

Patrick says he will decide very early Friday morning if it will be necessary to simply tell people to stay home for the day.

"I will make a decision by 5 o'clock tomorrow morning about whether to ask state employees to stay home and to advise private employers to take necessary measures to ensure the safety of their workers," he said.

The decision will be posted on the state's web site. You can also call the 211 information line.

"Those who must travel tomorrow," Patrick said, "should make plans to do so on public transportation for their own safety."

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Friday morning through late Friday night.

BOSTON SCHOOLS CLOSED FRIDAY

Boston schools will be closed Friday, the city announced late Thursday afternoon. Non-essential city workers were also asked to stay home.

The city implemented a snow emergency at 9 a.m. on Friday.
