Driving around Massachusetts the last couple days, you have undoubtedly been reminded that there is no state law requiring people to clear the snow from their vehicle roofs.
It is required by law for you to clear your windows, headlights, taillights and license plate of snow. When it comes to all that snow piled on the roofs of the cars and SUVs driving in front of you, drivers are left to rely on the courtesy of fellow commuters.
Bills to require clearing from vehicle roofs have failed in Massachusetts the past.
Most recently, State Rep. Cleon Turner of Dennis filed legislation last year targeting snowy vehicle roofs. The bill would have required vehicles with a roof area bigger than 10 square feet to clear any snow or ice accumulation greater than ¼ inch. It died in committee, but Turner's office told WBZ they plan to refile in January.
