The blaze started around 4:30 a.m. Sunday in a first-floor classroom of the East Somerville Community School.
WBZ
Students at the East
Somerville Community
School will be relocated to
three other city school buildings beginning Monday, Dec. 17. Classes for those
students have been canceled for the rest of this week.
The relocations are necessitated by a three-alarm fire that heavily damaged
the school early Sunday.
The School Committee voted Monday to accept Superintendent Anthony Pierantozzi's
recommendations, made with the goal of keeping all students with their current
teachers and classmates.
Beginning Monday:
·
Kindergarten students will attend the Capuano Early Childhood
Center.
·
Students in Grades 1,2,3,4 and 5, and Grade 6
students in the Unidos Program, will attend the Edgerly Education
Center.
·
Students in Grades 6, 7 and 8, excluding those
in the Unidos Program, will be placed in the Cummings School.
Sunday's fire destroyed one wing of the school and caused heavy damage
elsewhere.
"There is extensive smoke and water damage throughout the entire building,"
fire Chief Kevin Kelleher said.
Investigators said Monday afternoon the fire was probably caused by an
electrical problem in a classroom heater on the ground floor.
No one was injured.
