MIT Student In Logan Bomb Scare Gets Probation

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The MIT student who caused a major scare at Logan Airport last September was sentenced to community service and pre-trial probation Monday.

Star Simpson, 20, of Lahaina, Hawaii, was arrested by state troopers while wearing a computer circuit board and wiring on her sweatshirt when she went to the airport to pick up her boyfriend September 21, 2007. She was initially charged with possessing a hoax device.

Prosecutors later dismissed that to a disorderly conduct charge.

At a hearing in East Boston District Court Monday, Simpson was placed on one year of supervised pre-trial probation, ordered to perform 50 hours of community service – at least half of which must be spent with veterans of the U. S. armed forces – and write a letter of apology.

If Simpson completes the probation, the charge will be dismissed.

When Simpson went to Logan, she wore a white circuit board on her chest over a black hooded sweatshirt. The battery-powered rectangular device had nine flashing lights, and Simpson had Play-Doh in her hands, police said.

Two phrases that looked hand-drawn -- "Socket to me" and "Course VI," which refers to a major at MIT -- were written on the back of her sweatshirt.

The terminal was not evacuated and flights were not affected. But authorities were amazed that someone would wear the device to the airport where two of the jets hijacked in the Sept. 11 attacks took off.
