There'll be a blue Christmas on Beacon Hill -- or at least one with fewer party hats and open bars.
Gov. Deval Patrick has scrapped his traditional holiday parties for staff and the press.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino also canceled his party, one of the highlights of the season for the political crowd.
Patrick and Menino want to trim costs. They also don't want to be seen reveling in the midst of a recession and projected deep budget cuts.
Instead of partying, members of Patrick's staff joined City Year volunteers last week to prepare food and gifts for families in need.
Menino is encouraging people who typically come to his party -- and anyone else -- to drop off wrapped toys at his office.
