State Troopers Suspected Of Abusing Gas Cards

BOSTON (WBZ) ― Some state troopers are under investigation for allegedly using state issued gas cards for personal activities.

State police spokesperson David Procopio told WBZ the problems showed up when the department audited gas card expenditures this summer.

He sent a statement saying, "In the interest of fiscal responsibility, Massachusetts State Police in July began a proactive audit to identify any discrepancies between expected and actual fuel card usage.

"That audit of more than 2,000 fuel cards, which can only be used by personnel to fuel department vehicles for job-related duties, has identified several possible discrepancies that State Police are reviewing in more detail."

Sources tell WBZ that two troopers are specifically under investigation for allegedly swiping their gas cards for personal use and filling up personal cars.

Procopio says the discrepancy came up in an initial audit and was enough to now warrant a closer look. No one has been charged at this point.

"State Police will take appropriate disciplinary action against any member found to have misused a fuel card," the statement says.
