A State trooper was hit by a car on the Mass Pike early Saturday morning in Newton while he was responding to an emergency call.
Police officials said Trooper Dana Cresta was investigating a car crash along the Pike around 3 a.m. near mile marker 125 when a car driving in the breakdown lane hit him.
Police said the 49-year-old trooper was thrown 30 feet. He is being treated for serious injuries at Beth Israel Hospital in Boston. He was listed in fair condition Saturday afternoon.
The driver of the vehicle, 23-year-old Patrick J. Sullivan, of Framingham, was arrested and charged with drunk driving causing serious bodily injury. Sullivan and his passenger were not hurt in the crash.
Sullivan is also charged with operating in the breakdown lane and operating to endanger. He is scheduled to be arraigned next week.
Police said the driver involved in the one-car crash that Cresta was investigating before he was hit fled the scene before police arrived. Police say that crash happened around 2:20 a.m.
Trooper Cresta is a 23-year State police veteran.
