State Trooper Killed In Route 1 Crash

SAUGUS (WBZ) ― A veteran Massachusetts State Trooper was killed in a crash in Saugus early Wednesday morning.

Capt. Richard Cashin, 52, was on-duty when his unmarked Crown Victoria cruiser hit a pole, crossed a parking lot and slammed into a snowbank off Route 1 north around 1:45 a.m.

He died at the scene.  No other vehicles were involved.

Cashin was a shift commander with the State Police Troop A.  He worked the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift.

He is survived by his wife and four children - two sons, ages 9 and 13, and two daughters, ages 24 and 25.

Cashin started his career in 1980 with the Metropolitan District Commission Police, and became a member of the State Police when the two agencies merged in 1992.

It's believed that he is the highest-ranking State Police officer ever to die in the line of duty in Massachusetts.

Investigators would not comment on the cause of the crash, which occurred before Wednesday's snow storm began. Investigators are focusing on whether there were mechanical problems with the cruiser, or if Cashin suffered from some sort of medical issue.

"Captain Cashin lost his life in service to others, in the calling of public service that marked his long career," said Colonel Mark Delaney.

"For 28 years he worked to protect the citizens of Massachusetts, and that remained his mission through his last shift. The crash remains under investigation. But what we know now is that Captain Rick Cashin was a dedicated public servant, a fine police officer, and a wonderful husband and father. His memory will be with us always."

The road was closed for about three hours.
