Rep. Stephen Lynch is getting into the race for Ted Kennedy's U.S. Senate seat.
The secretary of state's office told WBZ a person representing Lynch picked up nomination papers Friday for the special election.
The congressman released a statement Friday afternoon saying he'd taken the first step in launching his candidacy for the Senate.
"The seriousness and urgency of this decision is compounded by the untimely passing of my friend and colleague, Sen. Ted Kennedy, and by the momentous challenges that lie ahead for our commonwealth and our country," Lynch said.
Attorney General Martha Coakley was the first Democrat to officially announce her candidacy.
Other Democrats considering a campaign include Kennedy's nephew, former Rep. Joseph P. Kennedy II, and Reps. Michael Capuano, Edward Markey and John Tierney.
Republicans weighing a campaign include former Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, state Sen. Scott Brown and former White House chief of staff Andrew Card.
Lynch is a Democrat from South Boston.
