Man Allegedly Steals Ambulance, Hits Cop Cruiser

SALEM, Mass. (WBZ) ― Salem police arrested a man who allegedly stole an ambulance from Beverly Hospital, led police on a chase, and crashed into a police cruiser before being caught by an officer as he ran away from the scene.

Salem police officials said 38-year-old William Guzman stole a Lyons ambulance and began driving it toward Salem over Veterans Memorial Bridge.

At one point, Guzman crashed the ambulance into a car on Bridge Street before police officers picked up pursuit on Winter Island Road. Police tried to box him in but Guzman drove toward an officer and rammed the ambulance into a cruiser. He was able to drive the vehicle around the other police cars, officials said.

Guzman parked the ambulance on Ford Avenue and fled on foot before officers were able to catch up with him and take him into custody.

No officers were injured but Guzman was taken to Salem Hospital with rib pain.

Police said they don't know Guzman's motive for stealing the ambulance.

He faces several motor vehicle charges, assault and battery charges and a stolen vehicle charge.
