Stolen Vintage Cars Find Their Way Back To Owner

CHELMSFORD (WBZ) ― "This is a very collectable item," said car enthusiast Gary Kinney as he pulled a blue tarp off a 1927 Flint.

There are eight cars in all, now parked where they belong, after they were stolen from a barn in New Hampshire.

Each one of them is a classic: a 1932 two-tone Pontiac coupe; a '71 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442; a '71 Mustang convertible.

Gary Kinney of Chelmsford is the rightful owner. He has them back after a man allegedly stole them and sold the cars to a dealer, who sold them to other people.

Now the dealer and those buyers are out of luck. "I feel bad for 'em," Kinney said. "But I'm glad I got my cars back. It's the last thing I would expect."

There are many victims here: the original owner, the dealer who bought the cars from the thief and finally the people who bought each car -- all of them ripped off.

The couple who bought the 1971 Oldsmobile spent $15,000, plus another $4,000 to get it running. They even drove it in the Epping, N.H., Memorial Day parade.

Now they still owe the bank and they've lost the car.

Gary Kinney has spoken with them, and with some of the other victims. "The people were very nice. I mean they understood the situation. (They were) very cooperative with police. I mean, they got caught in something that they really didn't understand… but when they realized (the cars) were stolen, they cooperated 100 percent."

So what's the lesson for all of us?

In New Hampshire, cars more than 15-years old do not require a title. In Massachusetts, any car made before 1980 doesn't need one. So it's buyer beware: Do your homework first, before you buy a vintage car.
