Electrical Fire Disrupts Boston Subway Service

BOSTON (AP) ― A small electrical fire sent smoke into the Downtown Crossing and Park Street MBTA stations, prompting an evacuation of both stations and disrupting rush-hour service on the Red Line.

MBTA spokesman Joe Pesaturo said the fire was confined to some cables in the pit of the northbound train platform at Downtown Crossing.

Boston Fire Department spokesman Steve MacDonald said the blaze started at about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday and was quickly extinguished. No injuries were reported and the stations had reopened by shortly after 7 p.m.

Shuttle buses were deployed to take passengers between the Harvard Square and Broadway stations during the outage.
