Father Says Tom Brady 'Tweaked An Ankle'
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Is Tom Brady hurt? Pictures and video of him wearing a walking cast Monday in New York created quite a stir. But his father says it's just a minor ankle problem.
It all started Monday night when video and photos showed Brady wearing a walking boot on his right foot. The video showed him walking with a slight limp from an SUV to girlfriend Gisele Bundchen's home in Manhattan, 24 hours after the Patriots won the AFC title. (You can see the entire video on the right side of this screen.)
Then hours later, another photo surfaced showing Brady and Bundchen leaving an East Village restaurant. Brady was wearing black shoes -- and no boot.
So is he hurt - and how serious is it?
Brady's father, Tom Brady, Sr., tried to set the record straight Tuesday afternoon in an interview with 1050 ESPN Radio in New York.
He said his son "tweaked his ankle a little bit" in Sunday's win over the Chargers and if it were a big deal he would have said something about it.
"Anybody that thinks a little tweak is going to stop him is just wasting ink," Brady, Sr. said.
The Patriots return to practice Thursday. The official injury report for the Super Bowl is not due until a week from Wednesday.
The chief of the foot and ankle division at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston said Brady doesn't appear to be seriously injured.
Dr. Chris Chiodo, who is not treating Brady, said he has used a boot to treat several ailments, including a sprain, a strain, a bone bruise, tendinitis or overuse of the foot. He said he strongly doubted Brady had a displaced fracture.
"I don't think he'd be walking on it if that were the case," Chiodo, an orthopedic surgeon told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.
Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Brian McKeon told WBZ he doesn't believe this is a serious injury.
"This is the end of a year. It's been a long road, this is when overuse injuries like tendonitis start popping up and flaring up," he said. "This would be the perfect time to give it a few days rest before his last game."
"That's a good sign, if he is hauling around New York," Chiodo told WBZ. "That's definitely a good sign if he's walking on it and up and around the streets of New York."
