High Winds Sweep Surfer 3 Miles Out To Sea

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WBZ) ― A surfer swept three miles off the Rhode Island coast by high winds was rescued by the Coast Guard Tuesday.

Nadelie Baggesen, 19, of Ashaway, R.I., was surfing with friends off Matunuck Beach in six-foot seas when 34 mph winds pushed her far from shore.

A waitress at a restaurant noticed the girl was getting further from shore and appeared to be in trouble, so she called the Coast Guard.

Baggesen told a Providence television station she realized she was getting separated from her friends and tried paddling toward them, but it was against the wind. She tried paddling with the wind, but that took her further out.

She said she had a "five-minute freakout" when she realized she was stuck, and says she thought she might make it all the way to Block Island.

The Department of Environmental Management and the South Kingstown Police Department kept tabs on where she was and directed the Coast Guard to her.
