Woman Critical After Fire Destroys Swampscott Home
SWAMPSCOTT (WBZ) ―
An elderly woman is fighting her life after a fire destroyed her home in Swampscott.
The two-alarm fire broke out in Barbara and Arthur Townsend's house on Forest Avenue around 10 p.m. Thursday.
Firefighters found her on the kitchen floor. She was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital in critical condition.
Her husband is in fair condition at Salem Hospital.
Investigators say the improper disposal of smoking materials appears to be the cause of the fire. It started in a family room between the garage and the main part of the home, which was heavily damaged.
The state fire marshal says smoking caused 43-percent of all home fire deaths in 2007.
