2 Ashland Students Tested For 'Probable' Swine Flu

BOSTON (WBZ) ― The Massachusetts Department of Public Health said Saturday that two Ashland High School students had probable cases of H1N1 flu, also referred to as swine flu.

Ashland Schools Superintendent Dr. Richard Hoffmann the two students were being treated at home while they waited for test results to confirm if they have the illness.

Results are not expected until Monday at the earliest.

School and town officials held an emergency meeting Saturday to review the situation.

The two students will stay at home until their family physician can certify that they're healthy enough to return to classes.

"Normally the parents decide when a student is healthy enough to return to school but in this case we want to take the extra precaution of requiring a doctors clearance before the students will be allowed back at school," Dr. Hoffmann said in a statement.

Hofmann said authorities discussed the possibility of closing the high school next week but decided that wasn't necessary.

The entire building will be disinfected Sunday.

So far, there are six confirmed cases of the swine flu in Massachusetts.
