Schools With Swine Flu To Close For 7 Days

Lake Street School is taking precautions in case two of its students test positive for swine flu after recently taking a trip to Mexico. If the kids do have the virus, the school could shut down for seven days under new guidelines.

The Massachusetts Department of Education and the Department of Public Health announced Wednesday that schools exposed to swine flu will be advised to close for seven days.
The guidelines will "strongly recommend" that if a student or a teacher is diagnosed with a confirmed case of swine flu, that specific school should close for seven days.

Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester says the department will be very flexible given the circumstances and will give strong consideration to waiver requests for make-up days.
State law requires 180 days of classes in a full school year.
Some school districts have already struggled to find time to make up days lost because of last
December's ice storm.
The DOE says it recognizes there is no additional time to make up for the possible closings.
Two young siblings in
Lowell have confirmed cases of swine flu after recently returning home from a trip to Mexico.
Test results are still pending on two separate cases in
Spencer and one in
Brockton.
According to the DPH, the Lowell children have "mild cases" of swine flu and are recovering at home.
