Swine Flu Becomes A Summer Camp Concern
BOSTON (WBZ) ―
Swine flu is sweeping through schools and it could head to summer camp too.
Pediatricians are warning parents to be on alert. "In my 23 years of experience, I've never seen a flu go this far into the spring and early summer," said Dr. Lester Hartman of Westwood Mansfield Pediatrics.
He says parents need to ask camps about their swine flu policy.
American Camp Association Executive Director Bette Bussel says camps are talking to parents before they come to camp about swine flu symptoms and asking them to keep sick kids away from camp.
She tells WBZ's Dawn Hasbrouck that there will be 2.5 million New England campers this year and if a child gets swine flu, refunds are not guaranteed. "All camps have different refund policies. The best thing is for the parent to talk directly to the camp director and ask what the policy is," Bussel said.
Nobles Day Camp in Dedham says it's ready for 1,300 camper to hit campus this summer and each will get a bottle of hand sanitizer when they check in. Director Emily Parker says refunds due to swine flu will be handled on a case by case basis.
"Campers and families shouldn't be afraid to come to camp because... it's summer," Parker says.
